6,400 Street Corners – One City

Streets shouldn't just be expressways for dangerous, cut-through traffic. They are public spaces in front of our homes that have enormous potential to create joy and connect us with our neighbors. As technology increasingly isolates us and political vitriol divides us, it's more important than ever to create community spaces that bring us together and allow society to heal.

Over 60% of U.S. adults report feeling lonely on a regular basis, with 61% of those aged 18–22 experiencing significant feelings of loneliness and despair. Feelings of loneliness remain higher than before the pandemic for many people, especially among middle-aged and older adults. Loneliness raises the risk of mental illness, cognitive decline, chronic disease, and even early mortality—on par with smoking in health impact. Participation in community groups, which foster social connections and promote a sense of belonging are one of the most effective ways we can combat the loneliness epidemic and rebuild social support.

San Francisco has a responsibility to lead, not just in technical innovation, but in mental health and social justice by opening our streets for human connection, creativity and collaboration. We are here to help you build a public parklet or green space for your community, host that popup event you've been dreaming about and help you get outside and make new friends.
